Pickleball Skirts

The pickleball skirt is the single most useful piece in your kit: modest enough for any court, mobile enough for every dink, and still the most flattering silhouette athletic wear has ever produced. Here's what to look for.

Skirt vs skort — what's the difference

A pickleball skirt is, technically, almost always a skort — skirt on the outside, built-in shorts underneath. This matters because lateral lunges and low reaches expose whatever's under a pure skirt. The built-in shorts are non-negotiable for any athletic skirt you'll actually play in. Vintage tennis skirts from the 90s and early 2000s all had this construction built in — it wasn't a feature, it was standard.

What to look for

  • Pleated (not straight-cut) — the pleats create visual motion and camouflage movement.
  • Mid-rise waistband with elastic or drawstring — no hard waist that shifts when you move.
  • Length between 12" and 16" from the waist — shorter reads 2000s, longer reads 1980s prep.
  • Color: go saturated or go cream — anything in between reads suburban.

Our favorite eras for skirts

Late 90s Nike and Adidas skirts have the cleanest cuts — Nike especially. Y2K BEBE Sport skirts have the boldest color. 1980s prep skirts (we don't stock many but they show up) have the heaviest fabric and the most construction detail. Each era has a different silhouette; try one that matches your playing style.
