What to Wear to Pickleball

Pickleball is simple to learn and easy to underestimate as a workout. You'll move more than you think. Here's the actual guide to what works on a court, what doesn't, and where to find pieces that aren't just beige tech wear with a logo.

The core kit

  • Top: racerback tank, polo, or fitted crop. Something that breathes and moves with you. Avoid loose t-shirts — they catch on swings.
  • Bottom: pleated skort, tennis skirt with built-in shorts, biker shorts, or athletic shorts with a 3"-5" inseam. No long shorts — they restrict lateral movement.
  • Shoes: court shoes built for lateral motion. Running shoes have the wrong sole pattern and will roll your ankles.
  • Socks: crew socks with a small athletic stripe. It's the era-appropriate detail.

What to skip

Loose basketball shorts (too long, too wide). Compression leggings (too hot on outdoor summer courts). Running shoes (wrong sole). Anything without pockets if you like to keep a paddle grip or hair tie on you. Denim skirts unless you are Instagramming and not actually playing.

Why outfit matters more than you think

Pickleball is the only major recreational sport where your opponent is three feet from you for the entire match. What you wear is visible, close, and part of the social performance of playing. It doesn't need to be expensive or precious — but it should look considered. A single vintage tennis piece does this faster than any new athletic brand.

Where we'd start

Start with a tank + skort combo from the pickleball edit. If that style doesn't feel like you, look at the tennis pieces — almost all of them transfer to pickleball directly.
