ALREADY LOVED CLUB

Eight formulas rather than eight photographs. Each one is a combination that reliably works, with a note on where it goes wrong.

1. All white, one accent

White pleated skirt, white racerback, one coloured trim somewhere. The most classic look available and the hardest to get bored of. Goes wrong when: the whites are different whites. Cream against optic white reads as a mistake rather than a choice — match them or commit to a deliberate contrast.

2. The matched set, worn as intended

Top and bottom from the same piece, nothing else. Zero styling decisions and it always reads deliberate. Goes wrong when: you add a third element. The set is the outfit.

3. Skirt with a plain knit

Pleated skirt, plain fine-gauge sweater, flat shoes. This is the off-court version and it is the one most people actually wear. Goes wrong when: the knit is oversized enough to hide the waistband — the proportion needs the waist visible.

4. Navy and white

The alternative to all-white and slightly less demanding. Navy skirt, white top, or the reverse. Goes wrong when: the navies are off from each other. Same rule as the whites.

5. Full Y2K colour

Aqua, hot pink or lime as the dominant colour, white as the base. Genuinely fun and much easier to wear than it sounds because the base does the work. Goes wrong when: two brights compete. One colour, one neutral.

6. The tennis dress, alone

One garment, done. Best single-purchase option in the category. Goes wrong when: it has no built-in short — then it is a dress that looks like a tennis dress, which is a different thing.

7. Track set, off duty

Full matched track set — velour or tricot. Not court wear, but it sits in the same family and it is the most comfortable thing here. Goes wrong when: the fabric is thin. Weight is the whole appeal.

8. Capri or flare set

Higher rise, longer leg, usually with a stripe. The most forgiving Y2K cut and the most underrated. Goes wrong when: paired with a chunky shoe — the line wants something low.
