The Y2K tennis look is specific enough that you can get it wrong with the right idea. It is not simply "vintage tennis" — the early 2000s had its own cut, its own palette and its own fabrics, and those are the three things to get right.
Lower on the waist, shorter through the skirt, tighter through the top. The waistband sits at or below the hip bone rather than at the natural waist, which is the single biggest tell between a Y2K piece and a nineties one. Tops crop or sit right at the waistband; nothing bags.
If low-rise is not your preference, the era is still available to you — look for the skort and capri cuts, which sat higher and are far more forgiving.
This is where the era earns its reputation. Saturated aqua, hot pink, lime, cobalt, lilac — usually against white or grey rather than against each other. The trick is that the base is almost always neutral and the colour arrives as a stripe, a trim or a single panel. Head-to-toe brights is a later invention.
Tricot, mesh, and velour. Velour especially is the fabric people forget — heavy, slightly shiny, and completely unlike the thin poly that replaced it. Mesh panels were functional then and read as detail now. None of these are being made to the same weight today, which is the practical reason to buy the period piece rather than a reissue.
Some of the best sets are not from one year at all — a late-2000s top with a 2002 bottom, matched on colour rather than on season. Purists will not like it. It usually looks better.
